Arndt von Haeseler retires at the Max Perutz Labs

Throughout his career, Arndt von Haeseler studied two fundamental questions in evolutionary biology: What are the evolutionary forces that have shaped the genomes of contemporary organisms, and how can we infer the relevant parameters from multiple sequence alignments? He has focused on developing mathematical, statistical, and computational tools to analyze the vast amounts of data generated by high-throughput technologies.

Prior to joining the Perutz, Arndt had already established a diverse academic career across multiple institutions. He completed his PhD at the University of Bielefeld and held several academic positions at the University of Southern California, the University of Munich, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and the University of Leipzig, specializing in theoretical biology, bioinformatics, and computational biology. He later became a group leader at the Research Center Jülich and held a professorship for Bioinformatics at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

In 2005, he became the head of the Center for Integrative Bioinformatics Vienna (CIBIV) at the Max Perutz Labs, a position established through support from a WWTF Science Chair. The CIBIV brought together experts from multiple disciplines, including computer scientists, mathematicians, and biologists, to tackle complex biological questions through computational methods. In 2015, Arndt von Haeseler was elected as a corresponding member of the mathematics and science class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2017 to 2020, he served as a Scientific Director of the Max Perutz Labs. His scientific contributions were recognized when he was named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate.

As he retires, the Perutz wishes him all the best in this next chapter of his life.
